Manuka Honey

Manuka Honey is produced by bees from the flowers (nectar) of the Leptospermum species plants.

Native to Australia and New Zealand, the indigenous people from both countries have used Manuka for its healing properties for centuries.

Australia has 85 species of Leptospermum. New Zealand has only one, which is believed to have originated from Tasmania, Australia.

Health Benefits

Manuka Honey is one of the most well-known honey in the World because of its medicinal properties including:

Antimicrobial activity

The ability to kill superbugs and antibiotic-resistant bacteria that cause serious infections.

Bacteria can develop resistance to modern antibiotics, they cannot develop resistance to the activity of Manuka Honey.

Wound healing, antibacterial & anti-inflammatory activity

The higher the activity rating the higher the antibacterial properties and strength of the honey.

Manuka Honey ratings

For commercially competitive reasons, there have been a number of symbols introduced into the market aiming to represent the antibacterial strength of active honey. These include NPA (Non‐Peroxide Activity), UMF® (Unique Manuka Factor), and MGO (methylglyoxal).

The antibacterial strength can be measured and is often shown as a number on the labels (i.e. NPA  10+;  UMF® 10+; MGO 263+). The higher the activity rating the higher the antibacterial properties and strength of the honey.

The approximate relationship between the MGO concentration and the NPA/UMF® antibacterial strength rating of Manuka honey is demonstrated in the table below.

Unique Manuka Factor®

Used to rate Manuka Honey that has been produced in New Zealand. UMF® historically was based on the NPA activity as measured by bioassays but has recently been updated to reflect the significance of MGO, in line with leading Australian research.

Methylglyoxal (MGO)

The naturally occurring compound that makes Manuka honey so special. The MGO Manuka Honey grading system is a precise and reliable test that simply and directly reflects the MGO content of the honey. The higher the MGO content the higher the grade of honey.

Non-Peroxide Activity (NPA)

NPA activity is very effective against many strains of bacteria including Staphylococcus Aureus and the MRSA superbug.
